A unique and previously unknown ecosystem , home to 60 million icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah)

Photos: An icefish colony discovered in Antarctica is world's largest known fish breeding ground

In Antarctica's ice-covered Weddell Sea, a unique and previously unknown ecosystem covering an area the size of Malta has been discovered, home to 60 million fish. A fascinating discovery reveals that little is known about the depths of the sea. Considered to be the largest in the world, the gigantic colony contains the amazing  icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah) with a transparent skull and transparent blood. Icefish are the only vertebrates that do not have  red blood cells.
In order to survive at such low temperatures, we have developed a floating protein  that stops the growth of ice crystals in clear blood. The
breeding colony was discovered in February 2021 by the German polar research ship Polarstern, which was surveying the seabed about half a kilometer below the ship. A car-sized camera system attached to the stern of the vessel was used to transmit video to the deck while towed. An expedition  focused on  the
current was surprising to find a nest separated by a muddy seabed and circular rock formations. Otun Perser, a researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, said: "We watched the fish nest for four hours and covered about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of the seabed during that time." Said. . He is the lead author of a study of smelt colonies published Thursday in  Current Biology. "I'd never seen anything like it in 15 years of being an ocean scientist," Purser said. "After that dive, we emailed the experts on shore who know about fish like this. They said, yep, this is pretty unique."
Four further camera dives revealed the dramatic extent of the breeding colony and its striking uniform nature.  "This is indeed a surprising discovery," said John Postlethwait, a professor of biology at the University of Oregon, who studies the fish. He wasn't involved in the research. “That's important too. The scale of biomass, at least for me, is unexpected. And the extent to which  fish alter bottom sediment structure (a) creates  habitat for communities that support the diverse species that have disrupted the food web,” he added. According to the researchers, the colony covers an area of more than 240 square kilometers (93 square miles). With an average of 1 nest per cubic metre, they estimate that the colony has about 60 million active nests.  Each equally spaced nest was about 15 centimeters (6 inches) deep and 75 centimeters in diameter and contained an average of 1,735 eggs. Most are guarded by one adult fish. Some nests contain only  eggs,  some are unused.

The nests are evenly spaced across the sea bed.

"The distance between nests is equal to the distance between birds on a telephone line," Postlethwaite added via email. “Some animals like to be sociable, but there are limits. Congregating may give them advantages for finding mates but provides a rich point source for predation."
The fish appear to be attracted by an area of warmer water, which is around 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding sea bed, which is a chilly 0 degrees Celsius, said Purser. (Sea water freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water.)
The researchers have deployed two camera systems to monitor the icefish nests until a research vessel returns. The hope is that photographs will catch more details about the fish nest ecosystem.  One question researchers want to answer is how long the adult fish guard the eggs experts suspect it could be months and whether it was the male or female standing watch.  "It appears that that the reproductive behavior of most, if not all, icefishes, revolves around male courtship of females through building a 'good' nest, said icefish expert H. William Detrich, professor emeritus of biochemistry and marine biology at Northeastern University, via email. He wasn't involved in the research.  The findings reveal a globally unique ecosystem, according to the researchers, and they say it should be designated a protected area.  "The implications for conservation of this species are clear a marine protected area should be established in the Weddell Sea to prevent exploitation of this icefish species, " Detrich added.

While the Weddell Sea is covered with sea ice all year round, the ice is relatively thin three feet thick meaning that photosynthesis can still take place and life can thrive. Purser said the bottom of the Weddell Sea  is far from barren, where sea sponges, corals, octopuses and starfish lurk along the seabed. He said about 2,000 seals also live in the area, and although there is no solid evidence, it is possible that they will dive into breeding areas and eat smelt.
Purser says there are similar nesting freshwater fish species, but scientists "have never seen such colonies  in the deep sea."
“I think we covered only  1% of the bottom of the Weddell Sea, but who knows what else is hidden here. I am sure there are many gaps in our knowledge of the depths of the sea.”

Messi Dibeli Kelab Gergasi "Serie A" Inter Milan!!

Highest temperature on Earth' as Death Valley, US hits 54.4C

The potentially record-breaking temperature was recorded in Death Valley, California

What could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth - 130F (54.4C) - may have been reached in Death Valley National Park, California.

The recording is being verified by the US National Weather Service.

It comes amid a heatwave on the US's west coast, where temperatures are forecast to rise further this week.

The scorching conditions have led to two days of blackouts in California, after a power plant malfunctioned on Saturday.

 What were the previous records?

Sunday's reading was recorded in Furnace Creek in Death Valley.

Before this, the highest temperature reliably recorded on Earth was 129.2F (54C) - also in Death Valley in 2013.

A higher reading of 134F, or 56.6C a century earlier, also in Death Valley, is disputed. It is believed by some modern weather experts to have been erroneous, along with several other searing temperatures recorded that summer.

  • Dangerous heat wave forecast for south-west US
  • Summers could become 'too hot for humans'
  • Last decade confirmed as hottest on record

According to a 2016 analysis from weather historian Christopher Burt, other temperatures in the region recorded in 1913 do not corroborate the Death Valley reading.

Another record temperature for the planet - 131F, or 55C - was recorded in Tunisia in 1931, but Mr Burt said this reading, as well as others recorded in Africa during the colonial era, had "serious credibility issues".

- DM

How To See all your Google Contacts on a Google Map

Create a Map of your Google Contacts

If you have been using Google Contacts (or any other address book*) to store the postal addresses of your friends and colleagues, you can easily create an online Google Map with all these address or even view them inside Google Earth. Here are the steps:
  1. Make a copy of this Google Sheet in your own Google Docs account.
  2. From the Google Contacts menu in the sheet, choose Initialize and authorize the script  (see source code) to access your Google Contacts.
  3. Next choose Generate KML under the same menu and the script will send a KML file to your email account.
Go to your mailbox and download the KML file to the desktop. You can double-click this file to directly open it inside Google Earth. You can click the pin /marker to read the full address and name of the contact.
Alternatively, you can upload the KML file to the web  and copy-paste the URL of the KML file into the Google Maps Search box as shown below (see a sample map).

Also see: Google Maps Address Lookup
Internally, the Google Apps Script reads the home /work postal addresses of your Google Contacts and then uses the geocoding service** of Google Maps to transform these human-readable address into latitudes and longitude values. These points (or placemarks) are finally put in a KML file that you can open inside Google Earth or Google Maps.
[*] If you aren’t using Google Contacts, you can still use the script. Export the contacts data from your existing address book (like Hotmail or Yahoo Mail) as a CSV file and import the file into Google Contacts. [**] Google’s Geocoding service allows you make 2,500 requests per IP per day.

New Discovery Mars is Full of Water!!

June 22, 2012

Scientists Discover That Mars is Full of Water

By Joseph Stromberg

Despite claims in the 1890s that Mars was filled with canals teeming with water, research over the past several decades has suggested that in fact, Mars has only a tiny amount of water, mostly near its surface. Then, during the 1970s, as part of NASA’s Mariner space orbiter program, dry river beds and canyons on Mars were discovered—the first indications that surface water may have once existed there. The Viking program subsequently found enormous river valleys on the planet, and in 2003 it was announced that the Mars Odyssey spacecraft had actually detected minute quantities of liquid water on and just below the surface, which was later confirmed by the Phoenix lander.

Now, according to an article published yesterday in the journal Geology, there is evidence that Mars is home to vast reservoirs of water in its interior as well. The finding has weighty implications for our understanding of the geology of Mars, for hopes that the planet may have at some point in the past been home to extraterrestrial life and for the long-term prospects of human colonization there.

“There has been substantial evidence for the presence of liquid water at the Martian surface for some time,” said Erik Hauri, one of the study’s authors. “So it’s been puzzling why previous estimates for the planet’s interior have been so dry. This new research makes sense.”

The research team, led by led by University of New Mexico scientist Francis McCubbin, didn’t even have to go all the way to Mars to find the water—they just closely looked at a pair of meteorites we’ve already had for some time. The Shergotty meteorite, which crashed in Bihar, India in 1865, and the Queen Alexandria Range 94201 meteorite, which landed in Antarctica and was discovered in 1994, were both ejected from Mars roughly 2.5 million years ago. Because they formed due to volcanic activity, when molten Martian mantle was brought to the surface and crystallized, they can tell us a great deal about the planet’s insides.

“We analyzed two meteorites that had very different processing histories,” Hauri said. “One had undergone considerable mixing with other elements during its formation, while the other had not.” For both of the meteorites, the team looked specifically at the amount of water molecules locked inside crystals of the mineral apatite and used this as a proxy for how much water was contained in the original rock on Mars that produced the meteorites. To determine the precise amount of water, they used a technology called secondary ion mass spectrometry, which shoots a focused beam of ions at the sample and measures the amount of ions that bounce off of the surface.

The amount of water in the meteorites suggested that the Martian mantle contains somewhere between 70 and 300 parts per million of water—an amount strikingly similar to Earth’s own mantle. Because both the samples contained roughly the same water content despite their different geological histories on Mars, the researchers believe that the planet incorporated this water long ago, during the early stages of its formation. The paper also provides us with an answer for how underground water may have made its way to the Martian surface: volcanic activity.

Earlier this week, we discussed how solar radiation is among the many problems that face potential human colonization of Mars, but finding a huge underground store of water inside the planet would still go a long way towards making settlement a legitimate possibility. In the long-term, drilling for underground water may be cheaper and easier than, say, trying to melt surface ice, or subsisting off the tiny amount of surface water that we know is present.

Additionally, the finding is getting an entire separate crowd excited: those who are hoping to find fossil or other evidence that Mars once supported life. The fact that water has apparently existed on the planet for such a long time makes the odds of life originating there just a little less scant.

All this from a pair of meteorites that crashed on our planet over a century ago. Just imagine what we might learn during future missions to Mars, such as NASA’s unmanned space laboratory, Curiosity, which will land on Mars on August 5th.

Still, it won’t be easy. Watch this NASA video to learn about the riskiest part of the whole mission—the seven minutes between when the rover hits the top of the Martian atmosphere and when it touches down.

Gerhana bulan separa di Asia - Asia witnesses partial lunar eclipse

GERHANA bulan separa di langit Ishinomaki, Jepun

Gerhana bulan separa di Asia

Kosmo Online

Asia witnesses partial lunar eclipse

SYDNEY — The first partial lunar eclipse of the year provided dramatic scenes across Asia late Monday, with a clear moon visible to many as the event unfolded.
While Australia and the east of Japan watched as the Earth slid between the Moon and the Sun, casting a grey shadow over the satellite, those hoping to view the eclipse in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur were thwarted by cloud cover.
"It does look a bit odd because it's not like a normal crescent moon," said Jonti Horner from the astrophysics department of Sydney's University of New South Wales.
"It looks like a bite has been taken out of the moon," he told AFP as he watched the sky.
Fred Watson, astronomer-in-charge of the Anglo-Australian Observatory in western New South Wales, said: "A partial eclipse of the moon is the kind of thing that happens every few years but it's still worth looking at because of its astronomical interest."
In Japan about 20 people gathered at an astronomical observatory 367 metres (1,200 feet) above sea level in Rikubetsu on the northern island of Hokkaido.
"People started to utter such words in admiration as 'it's beautiful' and 'it's awesome' as the eclipse neared its maximum level," Noriko Sasaki, a worker at the observatory, said by telephone.
Hundreds of people who flocked to the National Planetarium in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur after sunset to witness the spectacle were left disappointed by the clouds and instead were shown films on astronomy.
Skywatchers in the Indonesian capital were luckier as the weather cleared to give them a view of the phenomena for 90 minutes.

A participant peers through a telescope to view a partial lunar eclipse in Jakarta (AFP, Oscar Siagian)

"It's so interesting because you don't get to see an eclipse like this every year," said Ichshan Ramadan, 15, a member of a local astronomy club.
Monday's eclipse is part of a rare double show this week which includes the Transit of Venus -- one of the most eagerly awaited events in the astronomical calendar.
Skywatchers in the Pacific and East Asia were expected to have the best view of the eclipse, weather permitting.
Most of Australia, all of New Zealand, the nations of the South Pacific and Papua New Guinea were due to see it in full, while Southeast Asia, Eastern China, Japan and Korea were to witness most of it.
It will not be visible in Europe or Africa, but people in western North America and Mexico will see it at the end stages when the Moon sets.
"Actual eclipses are relatively common, there are usually about two a year," Watson said.
"But what makes them kind of rare is that they are not all visible from everywhere, and in particular solar eclipses really are only visible from a very small part of the Earth's surface."
On Tuesday, North America will get to see the early stage of the Transit of Venus which occurs when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun, appearing under magnification as a small black dot that trots across the solar face.
The next transit will not take place until 2117.
Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Japan and Korea, as well as most of China and much of Southeast Asia, will be able to see the entire transit, lasting six hours, 40 minutes, in what will be Wednesday morning their time.
South Asia, the Middle East and Europe will get the end part, when they enter sunrise on Wednesday.

Message from Anonymous: Music has changed!!!

Published on Mar 4, 2012 by
It is time for a change in online music.

Links:
http://www.anontune.com/

Article from wired.com :

Anontune: The New Social Music Platform From Anonymous In a move sure to attract attention from the music industry, a small group of coders claiming to be part of Anonymous is putting together a social music platform. The rather ambitious goal: Create a service that seamlessly pulls up songs streaming from all around the internet.
The project, called Anontune and still in its infancy, is designed to pull songs from third-party sources like YouTube and let anonymous users put them into playlists and share them — while keeping the service from being shut down by music industry lawsuits.
Reached by e-mail, one of the creators of Anontune told Wired the project was started by a group of anons who met online six years ago on what was then an underground hacking site. The group, mostly focused at the time on “cracking,” began discussing music, favorite artists and what they would do to fix current music business models.
“We would say stuff like, ‘People really use YouTube as a music player yet it really sucks for that purpose … it’s too unorganized,’” the anon wrote to Wired. “And then, ‘YouTube does make a good music player but you can’t play all your songs on it since the obscure ones aren’t uploaded,’ then eventually, ‘Hmmm, what if you were to combine music websites like Myspace, Yahoo, YouTube and others?’”

On the ever-sprawling internet, music can pop up anywhere — Tumblr pages, blogs, The Hype Machine (to name but a few). Almost any song is available at any time, whether posted by legitimate sources or uploaded by fans or pirates, and Anontune would tap into that rich reservoir.
It wouldn’t be the first time Anonymous squared off with the record industry: When popular file-sharing site Megaupload was shuttered by the Justice Department in January, Anonymous retaliated by attacking the websites of the Recording Industry Association of America and the DoJ. The DDoS attacks provide an undeniable look at what Anonymous can do in a copyfight, but if the creators of Anontune succeed, they could make something far more disruptive to the music industry.
The Anontune concept remained nothing more than talk until one day in early December, when an anon posted a link to Anontune and said he planned to make their ideas a reality. The others looked at the site. Although it wasn’t very good, the working prototype got enough people interested in the project that they “formed a team that day and stopped hacking,” the anon said.
The platform has been in development for just a few months, according to the video above (titled “Message From Anonymous: Music Has Changed”). Although Anontune is still very rudimentary, the service is meant to improve the way music is played online.
“It has come to our attention that the state of online music has been sabotaged by the fat hands of corporate involvement,” the Anontune video’s voiceover states. “These changes have led to a world in which your enjoyment of music is controlled and billed by the minute.”
Anontune pulls in music from various sources around the web.
Screengrab: Wired

How Anontune Works (And a Word of Caution)

Anontune works by automating what most people do online manually. After setting up an account, users can build playlists by simply typing in the names of songs they want to hear, or they can choose from the names of songs imported from their iPods. Anontune’s “music engine” — which runs in a user’s browser — then finds the songs on the web. Currently most of the tracks come from YouTube and SoundCloud, but there are plans in the works to add Yahoo Music, Myspace Music, Bandcamp and others. From there, users, of which there are currently fewer than 1,000, just press play.
(A word of caution to curious readers: The system relies on executing a Java applet. Unless you are extremely trusting or using VMWare, you should think very carefully about running code on your machine that was written by members of Anonymous.)
The stated central aims of the service’s creators are to provide a flexible, open platform for users to listen to music without having to pirate it or face legal repercussions — read Anontune’s white paper here (.pdf). True to form, users of the service can largely remain anonymous.
Although the site is still very crude and its origins obscure, the idea of Anonymous — even a few far-flung members of the group — tackling online music is compelling. But Anontune could come into the world with a target on its back, even if it operates using completely legitimate methods, according to Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Corynne McSherry.
“What we’re seeing here is a situation where the government is getting much more involved in enforcement, and we know that the U.S. government doesn’t like Anonymous all that much anyway,” McSherry said in an interview with Wired. Other music services can attempt to cut deals with music labels to avoid legal hot water, but that’s not really an option here.
“I think content owners, if they feel like the site is a really viable site, they’re going to be pretty nervous [about this],” McSherry said. “Because they like to have people that they can make deals with, and there’s no one to make a deal with in this situation.”
It’s hard not to notice that Anontune is popping up just as the U.S. government’s case against Megaupload is getting heated. Even though Anontune’s creators say the service isn’t a rebuttal to the shuttering of the file-sharing service, its timely unveiling could serve as a model for a different way for Anonymous to respond to incidents (as opposed to, say, directing Low Orbit Ion Cannons at the website of the Recording Industry Association of America).
“The project is not so much a response to Megaupload but a response to the tycoons from the RIAA shutting down music services,” the anon wrote to Wired. “You may have heard about what Anonymous has done in Operation Payback. We believe the underlying reasons for the revolt were (mostly) correct, however their approach is unlikely to change anything in the long run.”
When asked about Anontune by Wired, an RIAA spokesman declined to comment.
Anontune’s creators hope that in its complete version — it’s only about 20 percent there so far, our source said — the service can improve the way people engage with music.
“We have a lot of plans regarding this,” the Anontune co-creator told Wired. “The development of software to assist in achieving musical peak experiences, illumination of the functions and roles of music, psychometric testing based on music preference. It’s all there and this is possibly the most interesting part of the whole project.”
Anontune’s technical aspects can be reviewed online, and the site’s operators are taking donations. Even though its creators are still hurriedly trying to get the service up to snuff, the site has massive goals. One only needs to look at the final note on the above clip’s YouTube page to get a taste.
“We need to think bigger,” it reads. “This is Operation Mozart.”

Tips From Guiding Tech : 15 Killer Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts That Might Surprise You

Written By and published on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010. Abhijeet Mukherjee is the founder and editor of Guiding Tech.

One of my personal favorites among the new features that Windows 7 came with was the introduction of some awesome and long awaited keyboard shortcuts. I personally use them as much as I can to save time, and I recommend the practice of using keyboard shortcuts to others too.
This article talks about 15 really cool keyboards shortcuts that are specific to Windows 7. I can bet that you don’t know all of them. Check them out, some of them will surprise you for sure.

1. Ctrl+Shift+N to Create a New Folder

Create a new folder with a shortcut key
Creating a new folder in Windows explorer is something we all need to do on a frequent basis. And until now, there was no default shortcut key available for this task. But Windows 7 changed that.
You could now use Ctrl+Shift+N to quickly create a new folder in Windows or anywhere on your computer where a folder can be created.

2. Ctrl+Shift+Click to Open a Program As Administrator

run as administrator
There are many instances when just clicking on the icon of the application and opening it doesn’t solve your purpose. You need to right click on it and click on “Run as Administrator” so that you can make the required changes to the app.
In Windows 7, this can be done with a keyboard shortcut. You just need to point your mouse cursor on that program and then click on it while pressing Ctrl+Shift keys to open it as administrator.

3. Shift+Right-Click Enhances Send to Menu

send to menu
The above screenshot shows the default send to menu that I get when I simply right click on a program.
Now, if I press the Shift key, and while having it pressed, I right click on the icon, I get an enhanced send to menu. See the screenshot below to check how it looks.

Nice, isn’t it?

4. Shift+Right-Click on a Folder to Open Command Prompt

open command windows
If you do Shift+right-click on a folder, you’ll find an option that says “Open command windows here.” If you love working with the command prompt, this option should come in handy.

5. Win+Space to Quickly Show Desktop

Remember our quick tip on hiding open windows in windows 7 ? Well, this is the keyboard shortcut version of that mouse cursor trick. Pressing the Win key and the space bar simultaneously shows you the desktop immediately.

6. Win+Up/Down/Left/Right for Moving the Active Window

Create a new folder with a shortcut key
If you intend to quickly move the active window to make space for other apps, you could do that by using the Win key and one of the arrow keys. Each arrow key would move the window in the direction it is meant to.

7. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Left Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Left Monitor

If you are on a dual monitor setup using Windows 7 then you could press the Win+Shift+Left arrow key combination to move the active application window to the left monitor.

8. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Right Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Right Monitor

Similarly, if you need to move the current window to the right monitor screen, just press Win+Shift+right arrow key.

9. Win+T to Get to Taskbar Items

windows 7 taskbar
You could use the key combination Win+T to toggle through the applications pinned on the taskbar in Windows 7.

10. Shift+Click on a Taskbar App to Open a New Instance of the App

Let’s say you’ve got a bunch of Chrome windows open. And you need to quickly open a new blank window of the browser. Here’s the way – point your cursor to the chrome icon on the taskbar, hit Shift and click on it. There you go!

11. Win+B to Move Focus to the System Tray

system tray
In a previous article, we talked about a technique to add more clocks to the default Windows clock in the system tray. Now, if you need to get there without using your mouse cursor, how’d you do that?
Answer – Win+B. That would move the focus on the system tray, and then you could use the arrow keys to cycle through the items, including the Windows clock.

12. Win+P for Quickly Connecting Your Laptop to a Projector

projection menu windows 7
Windows 7 has a nifty projection menu feature which enables you to quickly connect your laptop to a projector or an extended monitor. Win+P is the keyboard shortcut for that purpose.

13. Win+1, Win+2..so on for Opening Taskbar Programs

Want to quickly open a program that’s pinned to your Windows 7 taskbar? You can press the Win key and the number corresponding to the location of the app on the taskbar.

14. Win+Pause helps you check System Properties

system properties
Need to take a quick look at what’s the processor model you are using, or may be check the device manager, or advanced system settings? You could use Win+pause key combination to open the system properties window.

15. Ctrl+Shift+Esc Can Quickly Open Windows Task Manager

I think this was in Vista too, I am not sure. But it’s a cool shortcut nevertheless. Just press the Ctrl key, Shift key and the ESC key simultaneously and you have the task manager pop up right in front!

Apartment Therapy Tip : How To Clean Your Jeans Without Water (In the Freezer!)

 By : Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan 02.22.10 4:30PM

I recently bought my first pair of "serious" jeans. The reason I know this is because as I was standing at the register about to pay A LOT of money for them, a cool dude who was standing next to me at the register said, "Oh, you're going to like those." "Do you have a pair?" I asked him. "Nope," he said, "But you're going to like those." I felt like a first time drug buyer or as if I was buying a Ferrari, not a pair of jeans. And then he said, "Don't wash them."
"Don't wash them?" I asked, thinking he was joking.
"Nope." he said.
"Oh, you mean I should only dry clean them?" I tried again.
"Nope." he repeated. "Never wash them. You'll ruin them."
It was at that moment that the woman behind the register piped up and explained that they only "get really good" when they're not washed. In a pinch, she said, you can wash them in cold water inside out.
And then she said, "But I freeze mine when they start to feel dirty."
Now I felt as if I were really entering a new land. Washing is not something I'd ever considered optional with clothing, particularly something as prone to dirt as jeans. And while I could quickly grasp that it was coolest to do nothing, I was fascinated by the notion that freezing a piece of clothing might somehow "clean" it, or at least simulate the cleaning process.
Apparently, although I'm new to this, washing jeans is really verboten and freezing has popped up as one alternative. While it doesn't make for lots of instructions in a How To, I thought I had to get this down in our archive. This is what the woman at G-Star Raw told me she did at home.
What do you do?

What You Need

Materials
A pair of dirty (feeling) jeans
A large Zip-Lock Bag
Equipment
A Freezer with Some Room

Instructions

Fold your jeans neatly and place inside bag. Seal bag and insert in freezer. Remove after one week and wear as new. While this process won't remove stains and isn't really intended for "work jeans" (I think), it is touted to kill any living organisms and make your jeans FEEL crisp and clean again.
Personally, after taking my jeans out this morning, I have to say they did feel crisper, though it may simply have been the cold. Other that that, I can't say I was fooled into thinking that they had been washed in any way, BUT they did - after all that time away from me - feel fresh and I'm glad to have them back.

How to Freeze Your Jeans & "Clean" Them

How to Freeze Your Jeans from maxwell gillingham-ryan on Vimeo.

Welcome to the latest episode in our new series of How To Videos. This one features a unique home cleaning tip. When I bought my first pair of "serious" jeans, the salesperson told me not to wash them if I wanted to keep the raw denim intact. Then she recommended the freezer method. It sounds like an urban myth, but I've found that it actually works (in a way).

What You Need

Materials
  • A pair of dirty (feeling) jeans
  • A large Zip-Lock Bag
Equipment
  • A Freezer with Some Room
