A unique and previously unknown ecosystem , home to 60 million icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah)

Photos: An icefish colony discovered in Antarctica is world's largest known fish breeding ground

In Antarctica's ice-covered Weddell Sea, a unique and previously unknown ecosystem covering an area the size of Malta has been discovered, home to 60 million fish. A fascinating discovery reveals that little is known about the depths of the sea. Considered to be the largest in the world, the gigantic colony contains the amazing  icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah) with a transparent skull and transparent blood. Icefish are the only vertebrates that do not have  red blood cells.
In order to survive at such low temperatures, we have developed a floating protein  that stops the growth of ice crystals in clear blood. The
breeding colony was discovered in February 2021 by the German polar research ship Polarstern, which was surveying the seabed about half a kilometer below the ship. A car-sized camera system attached to the stern of the vessel was used to transmit video to the deck while towed. An expedition  focused on  the
current was surprising to find a nest separated by a muddy seabed and circular rock formations. Otun Perser, a researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, said: "We watched the fish nest for four hours and covered about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of the seabed during that time." Said. . He is the lead author of a study of smelt colonies published Thursday in  Current Biology. "I'd never seen anything like it in 15 years of being an ocean scientist," Purser said. "After that dive, we emailed the experts on shore who know about fish like this. They said, yep, this is pretty unique."
Four further camera dives revealed the dramatic extent of the breeding colony and its striking uniform nature.  "This is indeed a surprising discovery," said John Postlethwait, a professor of biology at the University of Oregon, who studies the fish. He wasn't involved in the research. “That's important too. The scale of biomass, at least for me, is unexpected. And the extent to which  fish alter bottom sediment structure (a) creates  habitat for communities that support the diverse species that have disrupted the food web,” he added. According to the researchers, the colony covers an area of more than 240 square kilometers (93 square miles). With an average of 1 nest per cubic metre, they estimate that the colony has about 60 million active nests.  Each equally spaced nest was about 15 centimeters (6 inches) deep and 75 centimeters in diameter and contained an average of 1,735 eggs. Most are guarded by one adult fish. Some nests contain only  eggs,  some are unused.

The nests are evenly spaced across the sea bed.

"The distance between nests is equal to the distance between birds on a telephone line," Postlethwaite added via email. “Some animals like to be sociable, but there are limits. Congregating may give them advantages for finding mates but provides a rich point source for predation."
The fish appear to be attracted by an area of warmer water, which is around 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding sea bed, which is a chilly 0 degrees Celsius, said Purser. (Sea water freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water.)
The researchers have deployed two camera systems to monitor the icefish nests until a research vessel returns. The hope is that photographs will catch more details about the fish nest ecosystem.  One question researchers want to answer is how long the adult fish guard the eggs experts suspect it could be months and whether it was the male or female standing watch.  "It appears that that the reproductive behavior of most, if not all, icefishes, revolves around male courtship of females through building a 'good' nest, said icefish expert H. William Detrich, professor emeritus of biochemistry and marine biology at Northeastern University, via email. He wasn't involved in the research.  The findings reveal a globally unique ecosystem, according to the researchers, and they say it should be designated a protected area.  "The implications for conservation of this species are clear a marine protected area should be established in the Weddell Sea to prevent exploitation of this icefish species, " Detrich added.

While the Weddell Sea is covered with sea ice all year round, the ice is relatively thin three feet thick meaning that photosynthesis can still take place and life can thrive. Purser said the bottom of the Weddell Sea  is far from barren, where sea sponges, corals, octopuses and starfish lurk along the seabed. He said about 2,000 seals also live in the area, and although there is no solid evidence, it is possible that they will dive into breeding areas and eat smelt.
Purser says there are similar nesting freshwater fish species, but scientists "have never seen such colonies  in the deep sea."
“I think we covered only  1% of the bottom of the Weddell Sea, but who knows what else is hidden here. I am sure there are many gaps in our knowledge of the depths of the sea.”

Highest temperature on Earth' as Death Valley, US hits 54.4C

The potentially record-breaking temperature was recorded in Death Valley, California

What could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth - 130F (54.4C) - may have been reached in Death Valley National Park, California.

The recording is being verified by the US National Weather Service.

It comes amid a heatwave on the US's west coast, where temperatures are forecast to rise further this week.

The scorching conditions have led to two days of blackouts in California, after a power plant malfunctioned on Saturday.

 What were the previous records?

Sunday's reading was recorded in Furnace Creek in Death Valley.

Before this, the highest temperature reliably recorded on Earth was 129.2F (54C) - also in Death Valley in 2013.

A higher reading of 134F, or 56.6C a century earlier, also in Death Valley, is disputed. It is believed by some modern weather experts to have been erroneous, along with several other searing temperatures recorded that summer.

  • Dangerous heat wave forecast for south-west US
  • Summers could become 'too hot for humans'
  • Last decade confirmed as hottest on record

According to a 2016 analysis from weather historian Christopher Burt, other temperatures in the region recorded in 1913 do not corroborate the Death Valley reading.

Another record temperature for the planet - 131F, or 55C - was recorded in Tunisia in 1931, but Mr Burt said this reading, as well as others recorded in Africa during the colonial era, had "serious credibility issues".

Moment Beirut, Lebanese capital rocked by huge explosion!! #BeirutExplosion

Beirut, Lebanese capital rocked by huge explosion!! killing at least 78 people and injuring 4,000

A large blast in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, has killed at least 70 people and injured more than 4,000 others, the health minister says.

Videos show smoke billowing from a fire, then a mushroom cloud following the blast at the city's port.

Officials are blaming highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse for six years.

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

An investigation is under way to find the exact trigger for the explosion. Lebanon's Supreme Defence Council said those responsible would face the "maximum punishment" possible.

Hospitals are said to be overwhelmed and many buildings have been destroyed.

President Aoun declared a three-day mourning period, and said the government would release 100 billion lira (£50.5m; $66m) of emergency funds.

A BBC journalist at the scene reported dead bodies and severe damage, enough to put the port of Beirut out of action.

3,000 Year Old Reservoir Discovered In Jerusalem

The ancient cistern found in Jerusalem: Archaeologists date this back to the times of the 'First Temple', up to 3,000 years ago

By Eddie Wrenn

Archaeologists discover 3,000 year old reservoir used by pilgrims on their way to Temple Mount in Jerusalem

  • Reservoir could have held up to 250 cubic metres of water
  • Handprints of workers from 3,000 years ago still visible in plaster
Archaeologists have discovered an ancient water reservoir in Jerusalem which they suspect was used by pilgrims on their way to the Temple Mount.

The Israeli Antiquities Authority said the 'cistern' could have held 66,000 gallons (250 cubic meters) of water.

It likely dates back to the era of the First Temple, which could make it up to 3,000 years old.
According to the Hebrew Bible, the First Temple was constructed by King Solomon in the 10th century B.C. and then destroyed 400 years later.

Discovery: Israeli archaeologist Eli Skukrun reveals the large water reservoir from the First Temple Period

Rubble in paradise: A visitor at the Western Wall where rocks are piled from when the Old City walls were demolished centuries ago. The reservoir would have been accessed through a hole in the plaza floor, which is under the rocks

Israeli archaeologists believe the reservoir served the public in the ancient city, but say its location hints at a role in the religious life of Jerusalem.

Tvika Tsuk, chief archaeologist of Israel's Nature and Parks Authority, said: 'Presumably the large water reservoir, which is situated near the Temple Mount, was used for the everyday activities of the Temple Mount itself and also by the pilgrims who went up to the Temple and required water for bathing and drinking.

'In addition, we can see the hand prints of the plasters left behind when they were adding the finishing touches to the plaster walls, just like in the water reservoirs of Tel Beersheba, Tel Arad and Tel Beit Shemesh, which also date to the First Temple period.'
Archaeologists were working on the floor of another underground waterway when they broke through and discovered the cistern about four months ago.

The population of Jerusalem would have accessed the water with baskets from a hole in the roof that led to the plaza at the wall of the temple area.
Excavation director Eli Shukron said the reservoir sheds new light on the extent of the public water system in Jerusalem hundreds of years ago.

He said: 'It is now absolutely clear that the Jerusalem's water consumption during the First Temple period was not solely based on the output of the Gihon Spring, but that it also relied on public reservoirs.'

Spiritual centre: Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem

The Dome of the Rock, a Muslim shrine, occupies the former site of the First Temple, built by Solomon

The Gihon Spring was the main source of water for the city.
The reservoir was exposed during excavations on a massive drainage channel dating to the Second Temple period, according to the IAA.

When that channel was constructed, its builders had to remove or cut through existing rock-hewn structures along the route, such as this reservoir.

Archaeologists said they were able to estimate the age of the cistern based on signatures in its plaster treatment and its similarities with other First Temple reservoirs.

- Agensi

Jordanian MP Throws SHOE Then Pulls GUN On LIVE TV

Published on Jul 6, 2012 by
A Jordanian member of parliament has pulled a gun on one of his critics during a heated debate on live television.

Mohammed Shawabka was discussing Jordan's policies toward Syria on a television show on Friday with political activist Mansour Sayf al-Din Murad, the Times of Israel reports.

When the discussion became heated, both men began hurling insults, including working for the Israeli Mossad Intelligence Agency.

"You're a Mossad agent," one of the men said.

"You're a big crook," said the other.

The show's host Mohammed Habashneh, who was seated between the two men, desperately told them to "calm down".

But the MP pulled off his shoe and aimed it at his critic, who ducked underneath the desk and knocked it over.

Mr Shawabka then pulled out a silver gun before pointing it at the critic who was walking towards him.

The host tried to break up the fight by stepping between the two men, but the brawl reportedly continued for some time before the show's producer started to roll the credits.

Luka Magnotta Ditahan di Berlin Neukoelln || Luka Magnotta Arrested in Berlin’s Neukoelln

Magnotta is led away by police

Kosmo Online :

- AFP

 Magnotta enters the internet cafe

Cannibal gay porn ‘psycho killer’ Luka Magnotta caught on CCTV in Berlin internet café before arresthn Hall - Tuesday 05 June 2012 from http://www.independent.co.uk

The stills were taken by a CCTV camera in a Berlin internet café, and capture the moment an international manhunt for 29-year-old Luka Magnotta came to an end.
Magnotta today told a German court that he would not fight extradition to Canada, where authorities are currently preparing papers to request his extradition.
Magnotta allegedly murdered his 33-year-old Chinese lover Jun Lin in a Montreal flat on the evening of May 24. Parts of the university student’s body were then posted to political offices in the city of Ottawa, including the Canadian Prime Minister’s party HQ.
A ten-minute video entitled ‘One Lunatic, One Ice Pick’ was posted online after the killing. The footage shows a man thought to be Magnotta attacking his naked, tied-up victim with an ice pick, before hacking him to pieces, eating parts of his flesh, and performing sexual acts on his corpse.
Magnotta is thought to have fled Montreal for Paris two days after the murder, passing through customs unchallenged despite the international search for him.
Police say he spent at least two days in the French capital, before travelling to Berlin on a coach.
The bisexual porn star, who also worked as a gay prostitute under the name ‘Angel’ and has had plastic surgery to look like James Dean, was captured after an employee of an internet café in Berlin’s Neukoelln district recognised him.
To double check he had the right man, Kadir Anlayisl, began searching the internet for articles on Magnotta, and noticed the man in the café was looking at exactly the same articles on his computer.
Anlayisl then ran outside and flagged down a passing police van saying “I have someone here you might be looking for."
Police said there was no struggle in arresting Magnotta, who "tried at first giving fake names…but in the end he just said ‘you got me'."
Martin Steltner, a spokesman for the Berlin public prosecutor's office, told the AFP news agency that Magnotta’s extradition process could take months to go through, but added that it "will be easier and will be faster" now that Mr Magnotta has said he will not oppose it.

Mashco-Piro Indians A Lost Amazon Tribe

From www.thesun.co.uk News Thu, 02 Feb 2012

First pictures of lost Amazon tribe

A LOST tribe is captured on camera for the first time — before vanishing back into the Amazon rainforest again.

The Mashco-Piro Indians of Peru lined up along a riverbank to beg for cooking pots from passing boats.
They are believed to have finally rumbled the outside world as their jungle hideaway increasingly falls victim to loggers and firms drilling for oil and gas. The natives' strange tongue was unintelligible to all but a lone villager in Madre de Dios — an Indian himself.
But after befriending the tribe they shot him in the heart with a bow and arrow. An exasperated archaeologist said: "Now that he's dead it's impossible to make contact."

Up close one year later: startling new photos of uncontacted Indians released

Today's photos are the closest sightings of uncontacted Indians ever recorded on camera

Survival International has released close-up pictures of uncontacted Indians, exactly a year after aerial photos from Brazil astonished the world.
The new photographs taken in south-east Peru show an uncontacted family from the Mashco-Piro tribe.
The Mashco-Piro are known to inhabit the Manú National Park, but sightings of them have increased in recent months.
Many blame illegal logging in and around the park and low flying helicopters from nearby oil and gas projects, for forcibly displacing the Indians from their forest homes.
The Mashco-Piro are just one of around 100 uncontacted tribes in the world.
Exactly this time last year, Survival’s release of pictures of a healthy community of uncontacted Indians in Brazil was widely reported.
Today’s photos are the most detailed sightings of uncontacted Indians ever recorded on camera.

But the danger of contacting tribes who choose to remain isolated was reaffirmed by the recent death of an indigenous Matsigenka man.
Nicolás “Shaco” Flores was shot by an uncontacted tribe’s arrow near the Manú National Park in Peru. He had been leaving food and gifts for a small group of Mashco-Piro Indians for the last 20 years.
Glenn Shepard, an anthropologist and friend of the victim, wrote in his blog and in Anthropology News, ‘Shaco’s death is a tragedy: he was a kind, courageous and knowledgeable man. He believed he was helping the Mashco-Piro. And yet in this tragic incident, the Mashco-Piro have once again expressed their adamant desire to be left alone’.

Beatriz Huertas, a Peruvian expert on uncontacted tribes, told Survival the case is ‘unusual, complex and extremely delicate’.
‘Contact could happen at any time,’ Huertas said, ‘we must implement preventative measures and a contingency plan with local authorities as soon as possible to ensure this does not happen again.’
Last year Survival wrote to SERNANP, Peru’s Ministry for Protected Areas, expressing its concern at a video showing tourists leaving clothes for the Indians on riverbanks.
The area was subsequently closed off to tourists and an emergency warning issued to local residents.

Indian Affairs Department INDEPA plans to set up a guard post to protect both local people and the uncontacted group.
Survival’s Director Stephen Corry said today: ‘One year later these photos provide yet more overwhelming evidence of the existence of uncontacted tribes. It is no longer acceptable for governments, companies or anthropologists to deny this. First contact is always dangerous and frequently fatal – both for the tribe and those attempting to contact them. The Indians’ wish to be left alone should be respected.’
